The treeme project

Treeme stands for the sustainable cultivation and production of Paulownia tree plantations to supply premium quality, slow growth, plantation grown Paulownia wood to exclusive, discriminating, high-end markets. We are the leading innovators in the European market and we continue to pursue new opportunities with our usual mix of passion, creativity and dedication.

What drives us:

  1. First, climate change is a fact and today it is forcing a global rethink about how we look at forest products and wood production. In Germany today, trees are dying by the thousands due to lack of rainfall. Treeme Paulownia plantations represent an important and viable alternative with trees that are exceptionally hardy and ideally suited to climate change and variations in rainfall.
  2. Second, globally the demand for premium quality wood is increasing while the available supply becomes increasingly smaller.

Against this background, we at Green Wood International searched for a tree that could respond to this challenge economically and ecologically - and in the process we discovered Paulownia – a fascinating tree with enormous potential for the future.

The Treeme Project was developed and introduced by Green Wood International AG so that an individual could purchase a Paulownia tree or trees. These trees would be sustainably grown, maintained and harvested on secure Treeme plantations in Europe where they grow to an impressive 45 cm in diameter and 6 – 8 meters tall in a matter of 10 – 12 years.

At a glance:

  • An impact investment in nature delivering both financial and environmental returns.
  • Ownership of a unique Paulownia hybrid – Royal Treeme - a fast growing, hardy tree developed specifically for high performance in European climates and harvestable in 12 years or less.
  • Asset growth through the natural, biological growth of the tree.
  • Purchase price includes cultivation, management, care and harvesting after 12 years.
  • Premium quality wood as a result of carefully controlled, plantation management.
  • All-risk insurance provided by a well-respected, German insurance company.
  • Plantations located in Germany and other EU countries.
  • Trees can be re-purchased by Treeme at any time.

SUCCESS AS A RESULT OF SUSTAINABLE CARE

It is a major challenge to produce high-quality wood from Paulownia trees. This impressive tree grows quickly and, while hardy, care must be taken to manage against frost and other stress factors in the first years of growth. Frequent care and removal of unwanted branches is essential to achieve proper trunk shape and height – both of which contribute to premium wood when it’s time to harvest.

As a result of such care, the main trunk can reach a branch-free height of 6 to 8 meters. Also, the Paulownia tree needs a lot of light, meaning that proper spacing between trees is important. At Treeme we have established a tree spacing of 4 to 6 meters – plantation dependent - thus giving the characteristic appearance of all Treeme Paulownia plantations. Further, the Treeme hybrid – Royal Treeme - is a non-invasive species.

Planting and growing of Royal Treeme trees are done on short rotational plantations (SRP) - formerly farmland - and are managed on the basis of strict, ecological principles developed in conjunction with international growing partners.

Treeme plantations are created as a living eco-system having an important influence on the local animal and plant world. Since no known pests exist among our native flora and fauna, special prophylactic treatments are not required. Treeme plantations allow for unused land to be re-cultivated, reforested, in a low-impact way following principles that benefit the environment.

The selection and testing of areas suitable for our plantations is handled by Green Wood Service GmbH (GWS). GWS handles the planting, monitoring and supervision of the trees and is responsible for all the ecological and maintenance work required in connection with the planting. Due to the unique requirements of each Treeme plantation, we are constantly searching for new, European microclimates that meet the basic preconditions for Paulownia growth.

FAQ

General information

What exactly is the concept of Green Wood International AG?

Green Wood International AG (GWI), founded in 1984, is a specialist in Paulownia plantations. Our trees grow faster than any other hardwood or precious wood tree in the world. Due to the special and intensive care by our team, they are ready for harvesting already from the 12th year. High-quality products are manufactured from the A-grade (Clear & Clean) wood of the Treeme Paulownia. Our goal is to realize a maximum of environmental protection, ecology, sustainability and climate protection in addition to above-average yields. Through the treeme project, we offer interested parties the opportunity to acquire revenue-sharing rights related to the sale of the precious wood from treeme trees. The minimum number of revenue share claims is 15.

treeme – plantations

Where are the plantations located?

They are located in Germany and Spain. Basically, our locations are selected according to various criteria such as soil quality, climate, rainfall, etc. . Currently we have locations in Bietigheim, Opfenbach, Losenrade (Germany), Cáceres and Mallorca (Spain).

Paulownia-Trees

The plants are hybrids - what does that mean exactly?

Hybrids are a cross between several varieties of one species. In our case from Paulownia Elongata, Paulownia Fortunai and Paulownia Tomentosa.

CO2 compensation

How much CO2 does Paulownia compensate per tree?

Each Paulownia tree absorbs 64.8 kg of CO2 per year. For the treeme and myTreeme trees, we have a CO2 certificate based on scientific evidence, issued by SGS. You can find the certification here.

Information about your tree investment

Is a premature sale of the trees possible?

Sale, inheritance or donation of the trees is possible at any time to any person, passing on the terms of the contract.

treeme is offering interested parties the opportunity to acquire profit-sharing rights related to the sale of the precious wood of treeme trees. The minimum number of profit-sharing claims is 15. We would be pleased if you contact us for detailed information.
